Indiana’s new bell-to-bell cell phone law is now in effect for the 2026-27 school year. Students' cell phones, smartwatches, and other personal electronic devices must be powered off, stored, and inaccessible during the school day.

Thank you for partnering with us to minimize distractions and maximize learning.

Indiana New Phone Law. In accordance with Indiana Senate Bill 185, East Porter enforces a strict "bell-to-bell" ban on personal electronic devices to maintain a distraction-free learning environment: Prohibited Devices: Cell phones, smartwatches, earbuds/headphones, personal laptops/tablets, smart glasses, and digital gaming devices. Storage Requirements:Elementary: Powered OFF and stored inside a backpack. Secondary: Powered OFF and secured in a locker or vehicle. Exceptions: Allowed only for documented medical needs or as explicitly outlined in an IEP or 504 plan.

Dear Parents & Guardians,

We know attendance can feel confusing, and we want to help make it easier to understand.

Indiana law (SEA 282) now requires all absences—including excused ones—to be counted in a student’s overall attendance record. But don’t worry: East Porter is committed to partnering with families early to support strong attendance habits.

💡 What you can do:
✔️ Keep reporting absences as always.
✔️ Check out our updated attendance overview and examples of excused, exempt, and unexcused absences.
✔️ Review the East Porter Student Handbook (pp. 6–11) for our updated attendance guidelines. https://aptg.co/FD9plV

As always, reach out to your building principals for more information.

We look forward to serving your family for the 2026-27 school year!

Power is currently out at our Washington Township campus. This is the only campus impacted. The others are operating normally. We are in contact with NIPSCO to determine the cause and estimated restoration time. Our backup generators are fully operational, and all students are being served a hot lunch as scheduled. The building is safe, and we are monitoring the situation closely. We will provide further updates as they become available.
